2009 breeding season so far

Postby Darren on Sat May 16, 2009 2:28 pm

At last i have another 2 lizard chicks (4 days old) mother and chicks doing fine, crops full THANK GOD. Thats five Lizard for me now.

I saw a couple of Lizard men at a bird auction this week (not buying ought, just something to do) and they said they were having a crap season so far. When you look at the weather its no surprise, today in Nottingham it's been lovely, then rained, then lovely and now it's peeing it down.

Theres time yet though, all my other hens are sat tight.

Regards

progress to date

Postby Darren on Wed May 27, 2009 8:26 pm

A day after my last post my nest of two had a loss, leaving just one in the nest. This bird is no ringed and jumping about the cage floor.

To press i have 11 Lizard chicks, not big numbers i know but will do another round with 6 pairs, still time yet.

How are the rest of you guys (& girls) doing, it's all gone a bit quite out there???

FYI - my pair of Hoso have done nothing & currently got five Stafford chicks approx 12 days old with 2 more nests due off in the next couple of days.

On the Lizard front 11 chicks from three pairs in the first round ,
3 hatched from second round with 9 eggs being sat on by other two pairs.

7 experimentals ( scotch fancy x crested self green ) from first round 3 crested and 4 plain heads , two hens sitting on 8 eggs for second round.

Seclf Green crested cock to red hen 4 hatched .

Scotch Fancy , 1 chick from 3 pairs -----no wonder they are not popular :D

Hoso , first round 19 chicks from 5 pairs , 22 eggs being sat on for second round. Some of the hoso have already gone as they were bigger than parents at weaning and I've only retained 8 . Its the continentals I shall be up against with the Hoso mostly as that Gold Medal is my aim . :D so I have to be very severe with my selection .

Regards Paul.

Thats not bad at all Bridget, your doing better than me.

Lizard:

3 chicks on sticks (1st round disaster)
nest of 1 (14 days old)
nest of 1 (approx 7 days old)
nest of 1 (approx 12 days old)
nest of 2 (approx 8 days old)
nest of 3 (approx 5 days old)
hen sitting 4 eggs (due next week)

I am definately going another round due to the crap first round (if you can call it a round)

Japanese Hoso - 2 clear rounds (not sure if to go again or give up as a bad job)

Stafford:

nest of 5 (12 days old)
nest of 4 (2 days old)
nest of 3 (due off 2 days ago) Pants
pair doing nothing

I'm going to be going another round for sure, in an ideal world i would like 30 Lizard & 20 Stafford but will settle for 20 - 25 Lizard & 15 Stafford.

Can't wait to finish breeding now and to get through the moult to see what we've got.

PS - saw Albert Hallam & Harry Slater & Les Parkin a couple of weeks ago, their seasons about the same.

See you in October, can we get 60 Lizard to Kimberley at the open, i reckon we can.

Hi Darren
Just to let you now i have 13 on sticks, a nest of 3 and a nest of 2. I've put all birds that where not doing anythink in to the out side flight ( about 3 weeks ago). One hen (Daves 05) has decided to go down again, so shes been paired up again and has laid her first egg today, 18 chicks off 2 gold hens, now hoping that some of the gold cocks (if they are cocks :-D) get fit to put to the young hens.

Fair play Bridget, wish my news was that good. I'll just have to wait and see what this last round brings, I'd love to get another 12, that would bring me to a grand total of 20.

Went round Kev Skinners last night, he's over run with youngsters, as your probably aware he's had a blinder, 52 i reckon he said.

10 show cages, choice of 20 birds, I'll have to live with it (subject to me getting 12 more).

i have stopped breeding now guys/gals and have had a good year.

bred 26 from 4 hens.

1 round from each hen then 2nd round from 2 hens.

just its a shame its my last year for the foreseeable anyway.

things come along which steer us down a route we hoped not to take but such is life.

the silver lining here is all my birds are pre sold to ireland.

will still be at the shows ect...

Hi Everyone
My breeding season is almost over, I bred 24 chicks from 6 pairs and the last of the 6 pairs is currently sitting on 5 eggs, so it could possibly be 29 but I doubt it. Very pleased with this result as I only managed 6 from 4 pairs last season.
I feel a lot of thanks for this years results are owed to Stan Bolton for his continual very valuable advice and help when he started me off in the Lizard Fancy last season with 4 pairs of birds.

Hi Kevin

What happen to the pic of the Blue, Did Darren take that pic or did he just spend the day in ore of how many birds you had bred.

Mind you going by how many ads are in birdtrader for Lizards  what are the chances of you selling all your surplus

I have never seen so many ads with Lizards for sale, 1 guy in shropshire dont seem to happy about politics whatever that means

Any way Kevin, get Darren to whack that pic on the forum.
PS: How many you up to know lol
