Just been thinking, only 10 weeks to go until first show, can't wait, even if i win nowt it's still great to out and about meeting folk.

didn't stay long at the auction Kevin, was sat with Albert & Ken but phone went, work related and had to shoot off.

Kevin.

Well I look forward to seeing the Blue @ Kimberley.

Things are going ok @ the moment, fingers crossed I can get them all through the moult.

The youngster are starting to show signs of a bit of colour here & there so hopeful.
Doing the show cage training @ the moment, 2 birds per day as I only have 2 old Lizard cages.
Worrying time will be when I go on the hols for 2 wks, sister looking after me birds for me,never fed or watered a bird in her life, training her aswell .

Darren, Pleased you reached 15, thats not a bad number if you can get a few out from that, I to am looking forward to the show,s, Kimberley will be my first outing, hopeing to bring a few coloured aswell

I have to admit that blue lizards don't do a lot for me altough a good bird is a good bird no matter what it is , Gibber Italicus is a good example ---everyone recoils in horror when they first see them . But once you begin to understand them and then see a good one you can appreciate the finer points.

What I am very happy about is that this humble little forum that I started a couple of years ago can discuss a Lizard 'taboo' sensibly without anyone falling out , that can only be good for the future. Blue Lizards now have thier own class at the World Show and in Portugal 2010 a first will happen , a Gold Medal will be awarded to a Blue!

I can understand the old hands reluctance to accept them , a few of those breeders where about when the Lizard was a threatened breed , but that is in the distant past . Sure the Lizard will never be as popular as the fife or gloster but it is far from an endangoured breed anymore . I have to say I admire Kevin who is open and above board about keeping Blues and I only wish he had the proper rings on his so that he could have entered the World Show ----maybe next year.

It is no good the LCA burying its head in the sand , the debate will come eventually about accepting colour variations of Lizards , maybe not this year or next but it will come and I'd point the Council to Europe where colour varients are accepted but the funny thing is although they can show Blues , Pearls , Cinnamons , Reds etc the overwhelming majority of breeders still choose to breed the Lizard in Gold and Silver! There is nothing to fear.

Regards Paul.

All,

I have to say i don't think i would ever breed blues, but having been round Kevin's and seen with my own eyes the clear cap blue we are talking about it really is some bird, I'm sure if it had an IOA ring on it would have done well in Portugal.

Interesting point about most breeders on the continent choosing gold & silver as their majority, what Kevin does with his blues (dabbles a bit) is only what others do with say Hoso, Fife, Stafford of Glosters. Lets remember it is just a hobby, something to do for your own enjoyment.

Me personnally i would welcome seeing blues etc,i know what Kevin does with his non visual blues 9they go in a womans avairy free of charge for her own enjoyment) but suspect others would have no morals on this front and would pass off them as gold or silver causing problems with pairings throwing birds split for blue.

Wait till you see it Joe, bet you end up with a pair next year - you just wait.

PS - Paul - i used to hate gibbers, but could fancy a pair for myself, never say never.

Swiss Frills are the next on my wish list Darren but Gibbers are a possibility , I have a few pals in Italy that have some good birds so if you want some let me know.

You raise a good point about the ethical disposal of 'experimentals' and we know you are right when you say that there will be those who'll take the dollar instead of being truthful. All my experimentals end up as feeders for my mates that keep British or Norwich ,

I don't know if you've ever seen the Pearl ( Satinette Lizard) , if I was ever to vere away from the traditional Lizard this would be the one varient I'd have a good go with .

When you consider that Kevin is on the Council you have to respect him for being open and honest because we all know the aggro that blues have caused in the past but as I say they are here to stay . I'm pretty openminded about colour varients but definately draw the line on that horrible Vectis ( crested , red Lizard) which truely is a case of someone putting a crest on a bird simply because they can.

i to admire the colours in lizards and had blues last yr........i have passed them on and the splits to a person who dosnt show them but keeps for his own pleasure. as one or two of you may know i bred a nice non cap gold cock last yr that was only beaten at the southern lcc after winning itst class at the previous 5 shows.......................it was bred out of a blue hen.......he has now also left me to go into an aviary.
as its france in 2 yrs i might get a blue back and send sum to the world show...if i breed anymore gooduns lol

Blimey Kevin.

I started some debate on the Blues, did,nt expect that.

Darren, Yep I do like the Blue,s ever since I saw Kevin,s @ the All Variety I am a bit hooked on them, did,nt you notice me keeping going back to have another look @ them.
I am going to try & get some if I can, friend of mine said he could get some but that was last year and it never transpired.
Friend also said this year recently he could get me a pair , will see.
But if there,s any one out there who knows a source I would be interested.
France world show seems like it is going to be a big thing with all us Lizard breeders, what an important breeding season next year will be for all

Hi everyone, been following this debate with great intrest. as some of you may know I won Best AOV canary at the National two years running with a Blue Lizard.
At the time is caused a great deal of controversy with articles in Cage Birds. I was told at the time by top Lizard breeders that my blue we some of the best he had seen, and he had seen a number in Europe. I must admit at that time my blues were far better than my normals. But I went backward by using the wrong matings with my blues. I paired Blues to silvers which I feel was incorrect, I feel this weakened the spangles, I should have paired Golds to Blues.
Well that's my opinion. I know who has Blues! Will he show them at the World Show???

Hold on David, you,ve started a form of secrecy there.

Know, I was down your room and I never saw any Blues, I know John Martin did,nt have any when I visited,Nigel irwin did,nt have any when I was up his neck of the woods, Andy said he had some before, Paul said he like,s the pearl, they dont rock Darren,s boat and we all know Kevin definately has Blues.

Hmmmmmm, you never know what people have hidden away in their bird rooms.

Seems that there is a likeing for them, by some

adding to my post above.....i regret passing on the blues as i really do like them , so much so iv emaild the person who had them off me to see if i can get 1 or 2 back. and dave i think you are absoutly correct it has to be gold to blue. the blue is resessive just like a border/fife/gloster/norwich/yorkie white. always pair a white to a yellow feather. if you pair a yellow green to a white ground bird you get blue so as a lizard is a self bird a gold to blue must be the way fowards...................i would luv to see a non cap blue cock.......that would be lovely im sure

Well bugger me with a barge pole. The forum has been a bit quiet of late, until Joe spoke of the one we shouldn't speak about, the blue.

I reckon i know a bloke who may have a blue for sale Joe, don't live that far from me either, can you guess who???

Fair play fella's, you see we all secretely admire them for what they are, nice looking birds.

PS - are you gonna get some IOA rings next year Kevin? I'll even drive with you to France.

blimey, if this carries on i might be chucked off the council .joe im sure ill be ale to help if your interested as long as i get them throughthe moult ok. ive decided to keep maybe 2 splits, to pair back to visual blues, we,ll see what results. because of the interst this post has commanded it would be nice to think that one day colour variant lizards may get a decent stage to be viewed on, instead of the aov section along with single exibits of other rare or unpopular varietys of canary, it may happen one day but it will probably be after my showing days are over, as for the ioa ring suggestion its a definate maybe, ill be talking to paul during the show season. tata
