Correct Pairing for Cinnamon Hen

Postby Lizard from Oz on Sun Jul 19, 2009 12:46 am

I've been breeding non colour fed lizards for 3 years here in Australia, and I understand only colourfed lizards are shown in the UK but was wondering if anyone could tell me the correct pairing for a cinnamon hen? Should it be to a Gold or Silver cock?

Well cinnamon lizards are not reconigized variety of Lizard, so would recommend you pairing any Lizard to a cinnamon. Roger Caton did try this pairing back in the eighties and he had a number of colour variations, but none really looked like a true Lizard with the possible expecation of the Blue Lizards. which are the only colour variety that are still around, and the number of them seem to be increasing, even although these are not reconigized by the LCA.
But cinammon I thing would only course problems with feather quality, by making the feather very fine. but this is only my opinion.

Thanks David. Here in Australia Cinnamon Lizards are shown in their own class on the show bench and this hen appeared out of a normal Gold x Silver pairing last year so the cock (which was bird I bought in) must have been a cinnamon carrier. I reckon your are right with the fine feather issue as the markings are definitley weaker in the cinnamon bird.
But for the sake of experimenting I will pair this hen to a gold cock this year and see what happens
Cheers

Hello Richard ,

I found this interesting because it is my contention that all modern day varieties of canary actually came from the cinnamon . we've discussed this before .
Cinnamon occurs in the wild and is generally thought to come about by very close inbreeding ,in HERVIEUX'S LIST OF CANARIES (1713) he mentions
Serin Agate commun. (The original Lizard Canary.) & Serin Agate aux yeux rouges. (The Lizard with pink eyes, showing cinnamon origin.)
Suggesting the Lizard could be a Cinnamon Agate ?

Cinnamon is often used by UK breeders of type canaries to control the feather and I'm not convinced a gold (yellow feather) would be the right choice , as David says it might become to fine ----if I was to undertake such a pairing I think I'd look for a Silver ( buff feather) that wasn't overly buff if you get my drift. Of course you could run her to both a Gold and a Silver over the course of a breeding season and then you'd know for sure.

Regards Paul.
