my stock for 2009

Postby steve on Thu Mar 12, 2009 7:47 pm

well people.

spent the whole day in the shed today, sitting quiet in the corner watching.

i have 3 trio's and 1 pair plus 2 silver birds that are probably late breds as they are neither singing or calling.

working on the average of 5 chicks per hen per year i think i may needs more rings.

i called paul this afternoon and ordered another 10 just in case, that give me 40 rings and IF i fill them then i will very happy man indeed.....

its now been 5 days since i replaced the solid dividers with wire ones and today whilst i was siting up the shed i noticed the cocks are all feeding their hens through the wire.

the cocks that are being used in trios are feeding both hens,i will give them another couple of days then put the solid dividers back in place.

hopefully will be ready around mid april......

hi steve
give the hens a few pieces of string/nesting material and watch them....if they play with it or ignore it then wait.but if they pick it up and take it right in the backs of their beaks they are in breeding condition
if you put a solid divider back in only put it in for 24 hrs and id eat daves hat if the hen dosnt want mateing as soon as its pulled....works for me anyway

you will eat daves hat.....blimey,thats confidence.

this morning i thought i would place nest pans and a little material in with the hens just to see how far away they are.

of the 7 hens,4 started building straight away and the other three carried and called.....

hi steve

roy fox...international fife judge...once to me that if you only have 15 mins a day for your birds you should spend 5 mins feeding , 5 mins cleaning , and 5 mins watching them.
i know im lucky these days as i work with my partner sharon from home but sometimes i struggle to get 1/2 hr in the shed a day....(take your eyes off the kids for a sec and its hell lol)
it only takes me 15 mins to feed my stock at most time.....iv never been good at the cleaning bit :( but i will spend a good deal of time watching untill the naggin starts

ps if i end up eating the hat please supply tabasco or chilli sauce....bloody hot too

ttfn andy

paired up already

Postby Darren on Tue Mar 17, 2009 8:43 pm

I've done it boys, paired up last weekend and sitting with fingers crossed.

I decided to take the plunge after arriving home from stafford, i went into clean out my stock cages and had cocks banging at the dividers trying to get to the hens.

i have paired up:

7 pair of Lizard (1 hen waiting for a cock to service another hen)
1 pair Hoso
1 pair of Stafford

I currently have 3 Lizards who have built a nest & a pair of Hoso also. Every day i enter the bird room like its Christmas morning, only problem is Santa hasn't dropped any eggs off yet, still theres always tomorrow.

hi all
stan boulton phoned me at the end of last week and after our discussion paired up this weekend.....well monday actually.
when he entred his shed tuesday he had 7 nests built and 3 hens starting and had already had eggs in his flight.
as iv stated in here before we are definately starting earlier each yr these days in fact may and june was prime time for goldfinches and redpolls to hatch their young but 2 yrs ago by brothers birds were hatching in april.
arround this area (kings lynn and fenland) we seem to not get the really cold weather like we used to even though we had a good bit of show this yr it wasnt as bad as the rest of the country.
just think..in 5 to 10 yrs time we could all holiday in cos da la kings lynn lol

Holiday in 'Costa' King Lynn?
You need a fornight to get past those bloody great 'Trac'ors' roaring down the road at 4mph. You can't get out and have a row with the drivers coz they all make Andy look like a midget , they breed 'em big up there ! :D

just to bring everything up to date....

HEN 1......5th egg today (all clear as she has not been with a cockbird yet)

HEN 2......2nd egg today

HEN 3......3rd egg today

HEN 4......4th egg today

i think what i will do is see if one off the hens (2,3 or 4)lay 6 eggs,if so i will put 3 under hen number 1.

steve
do you take the eggs away??????
with all your hens laying so close wait till the last hen has laid her 4th and set all the hens at the same time.

if you foster the eggs to hen 1 you will waste a month before she lays again.....hens will cope with 5 chicks...especially if the cock helps but sometimes a fit cock will drive the hen to nest again.

my hen that lost her chicks last week has laid again....1 hen built a nest 3 weeks ago and hasnt laid...and 4 hens aint interested at all yet.
i will be ringing my first chicks today...time flies dont it lol
