Slip Claw

Postby Darren on Sun Jul 12, 2009 4:29 pm

I have a bird which has 2 no claws which instead of wrapping around the perch face forward, i think this is slip claw but am not sure.

can anything be done about this or is it too late. Chick is approx 6 weeks old.

This is a tough one but I have found that if you selotape (see through type) the claws back flat and leave on for as long as possible there is a good chance that the foot will come back ok. The selotape will not affect the bird in any way and you can keep note of the tape and claw staying in place.
When you take it off use a round perch as I have found this best in the past, Probably need to leave them back for @ least a month.
Its worked for me, give it a bash nothing to lose, you may need help to tape.

I have found that you can use a plastic spilt ring to hold the claw in place. placing the split ring over the claw holding up the leg. it has worked for me in the pass. i found tape so difficult to get in the correct position, and i get the tape stuck every where but where I want it.

If I can add to this , I use a plastic drinking straw split down the side (similar to Dave's split ring) . Hold the claw back with what ever method suits you . The bird should be placed in a cage with a nice deep layer of shavings with no perches . If you use flowmatic drinkers place them down low. For 3/4 weeks you don't want the bird perching or attempting to perch . After about a month when you remove the tape/ring etc. place a vey small diameter perch , about pencil thickness , 2" from the floor . Only one perch , you don't want two because if the bird is spooked and flys to the other perch and bangs its claw again you are back to square one . The small diameter perch will force the bird to grip tight therefore strengthening the claw.
I have found over the years sucess rate is about 50-50.

Regards Paul.

One of them has a front claw facing forward, to be honest i think i will leave well alone. If there cocks they will be OK for breeding, if their hens they will become avairy birds.

I would be looking to see if i could find the cause, maybe leaving nest to early and having slipery floor, or being ssquashed in the nest....

remedies could be thick cage substrate or leave a dummy egg in nest with only 1 or 2 chicks...
